Microsoft networking relies on the use of browse lists which contain a list of servers that have shared network resources. In this case, the word server refers to any networked computer sharing a resource.

The Master Browser is the computer that maintains the main list for the local subnet (i.e. segment). The following diagram illustrates how the browse list is built and maintained.
