Evernote Update and Invites

Posted on the March 30th, 2008 under Business, Technology by Al

An Evernote update went out last week [Mac Version 1.0.3 Beta (27326)] which included a number of new features, including 10 invites to hand out. If you are interested in trying out Evernote, let me know and I’ll provide an Invite while they last. The Web and Mac features are listed below.

Evernote Web

  • Switching between Thumbnail and List views now keeps the user scrolled to the same spot in the result set
  • Single-Note view now displays the source URL from web clips and other note attributes
  • Thumbnail and List views now immediately adjust their scrollbars to reflect the total number of notes in the result set making it easy to find other notes and keep track of where you are.

Evernote for Mac (download)

  • Todo checkbox support
  • Note Info panel now shows image recognition status, when applicable
  • Spell checking is now enabled in the note title field.
  • Bold, italic, underline and strike thru formatting are now preserved when syncing and copying/pasting.

New Blogging Software - WordPress 2.5

Posted on the March 30th, 2008 under Technology by admin

I’ve installed WordPress v2.5 for this blog. I had been using SimplePHPBlog, which worked fine, because I didn’t have databases available on a previous server. Two servers later now, I wanted to take advantage of using the industry leading WordPress. The challenge was moving my old blog posts to the new WordPress installation. I found a Perl script that attempts to do this. It didn’t work with WP 2.5, although the problem may have been due to a categories issues other users had reported I attempted to import the original posts in WP 2.0, with the plan of upgrading to WP 2.5, but that didn’t work either. So, instead of wasting the whole afternoon troubleshooting this with the possibility that it may never work, I decided to start using WP 2.5 without importing. Instead I’m providing a link to the old blog. It would be nice to someday import the old posts here.

Evernote - My Future Note Catcher?

Posted on the March 24th, 2008 under Technology by Al

I use multiple computers, so I enjoy online apps (a.k.a. “cloud computing” ). Google Docs have been a part of my daily computer use since Documents was originally called Writely.

I am a disorganized mess, just ask my wife. I heard Merlin Mann (43 Folders) mention Backpack on Macbreak Weekly. I tried it out and love it. It allows me to post notes, to-do lists, etc., in my online account. It’s not as freeform as Microsoft OneNote, but being online is more important to me since I don’t use a single computer.

Last week, I saw a tweet (Twitter post) by Leo Laporte about Evernote. I checked out their site and was impressed by the demo video. I signed up for the Mac client beta right away and was fortunately to get an invite within 36 hours.

Evernote provides multiple entry points to access your notes: web client, Windows client and now Mac client. You can also send notes to your account via e-mail and cellphone. The clients all sync so you have access to your accounts from multiple systems.
